Self Destruction

Uhmmm. Yes. Tis something I painted for the abstract painting course that I'm in. Ahh it didn't do well in critique. Upon seeing it, this chick in her 30s who doesn't like me (not sure why. I've never done anything rude to her and always try to be friendly and smile, but she just acts that way toward me in general) asked me something along the lines of, "Do you have something against painting, lately?" That was literally the only thing said other than someone saying they liked the squares tossed throughout. Eh... What does that even mean, though? That isn't critique. It sounds more like an attempt to insult me. It especially does since she only says positive things about other peoples' work (she even said so herself once after fussing about me painting on cardboard) and she never actually points out the parts that make her dislike mine. If she'd tell what she thought was off in them, I really wouldn't mind. She essentially just says she doesn't like them at every critique. It isn't helping me improve at all. I would love a real critique... oh well.

Anyway, before I rant any longer, the idea behind this was, as the title says, self destruction. I was focusing more on the psychological aspect than the physical such as depression, self loathing, and doubt. Eh... I think I got a little too literal with my idea, though. It seems that I just made another random excuse to paint a monster...
The drips on the shoulder was unintentional, but I liked it and thought it added to the overall idea of the painting, so I left it.
And, obviously, his body is supposed to be distorted.

Hmhm...

I like the style you have in general. I kept meaning to post a comment on this guy and still haven't till today. Gosh darn.

I know that a lot of people told me I had talent when I didn't. What frustrates me is that a lot of people ... you can just see their heads getting their wires crossed. Something that makes them feel happy, they think it's good, and they take the inverse of that to same degree. I just don't get why people do it. Heaven forbid I express something that is strong and mentally impacting and wrong. I think it's just that people have more nerves than they have brains. Wait... *confused*

Anyways... It goes without saying that I find this piece awesome. Wish I could see your work in real life, and especially would love to trade art by mail with ya, but all the same, just the picture/scans I see convey enough. You've got an awesome sense of color and shape, and the compositions you do are always so jarring... gotta love how this one irks out that feeling of "are they... smiling, while the monster is snatching them?"... I only wish that the lighting was more dramatic, since it'd really push on people's eyes. But that's me. I'd like to be edgy with this stuff. A shame I can't critique more, but now I'm learning just how poor critiques are online... I post my scans, and I realize more than ever how much digitizing stuff can drop so many features.
